James Dashner's book The Maze Runner tops box office sales

Movie Title:  Maze Runner
PG-13, 1 hour 54 minutes

Grade:  B+

In a Nutshell:   I’m so thrilled for my friend, James Dashner, who is the author of The Maze Runner Series (Maze Runner) that this film is based on!  I first met him when he and I were doing a book signing at the same store.  People were lined up to meet him, of course, while I sat and twiddled my thumbs.  Ha ha  I have a hard time picturing my books being made into movies since I write non-fiction!

He and I are both members of the same author group and he is considered our resident rock star.  I’m so happy that his book was made into a movie!  That’s so unbelievably awesome!  Here is a picture of the two of us at a recent writers’ conference:

The story is a bit of a dystopian Lord of the Flies , as teenage boys try to figure out how they ended up on the edge of a killer maze and who put them there.  I haven’t had time to read the book, so I’m not sure what we might be missing in this suspenseful flick, but James said that the “tone and spirit and vision” of what he wrote in the book is totally in the movie.

Uplifting theme:
Learning how to work for the benefit of others, these teenage boys also demonstrate courage, sacrifice, and teamwork.

Things I liked:
  • As a mother of 4 sons, I thought it was funny and definitely true-to-life that the boys generally spent their evenings wrestling each other.  Ha ha
  • The scary noises reminded me of the creepy alien sounds in Tom Cruise's movie The War of the Worlds .
  • The movie starts fast and throws us into the action without dilly-dallying..  I always like that!
  • All of the young actors did a great job, although I wish there had been time for more character development.

Things I didn’t like:
  • There were some plot holes that bugged me.  I’m assuming the sequel will fill them?
  • The runners wore these leathered, strappy things, but I couldn’t see what purpose they served.  They weren’t quite backpacks, so what were they for?
  • They say “W.K.D. is good.”  Really?  No, I don’t want kids thinking wicked is good.
  • Despite being trapped in a camping set-up, the boys are able to concoct some form of alcohol for partying at night.

Interesting lines:
  • “You’re not like the others; you’re curious.”  - Alby
  • “It’s not a prison; it’s a test.”  - Thomas
  • “You’ll get your name in a day or two.  That’s one thing they let us keep.”  - Alby
  • “You don’t get it.  We’re already dead.” – Minho

Funny lines:
  • “I don’t know if he’s brave or stupid.  Whatever it is, we need more of it.”  - Minho
  • (SPOILER ALERT)   “Seriously?”  - Jeff, when he sees the “Exit” sign.
  • “I thought you had the chops to be a runner…until you face-planted.” – Newt

Fun Facts about James Dashner:
  • He and I both graduated from BYU.  He majored in accounting, which seems like such a boring profession for such a creative guy!  He said “My heart bleeds for accountants.  I don’t miss it even in the slightest, tiniest, little bit.”  Ha ha
  • James is a movie buff like me and confessed that movies like “Star Wars”, Alien , The Terminator and The Matrix influenced his writing.  It was the maze in the movie The Shining that got him thinking about writing his own novel that would feature one.
  • Now that his book has been turned into a movie, he’s interested in screenwriting.  Go James!

Tips for parents:   Mild profanity, deaths, scary noises, violence.  Small children may be frightened by the “grievers” (robotic monstors that chase and kill the “gladers”).

"My Future's So Bright" book is a shining success!

I'm so excited about my newest book that just hit store shelves!

It's for LDS (Mormon) teenagers and has some fantastic comic strip artwork by my talented niece, Brittany Long, who recently returned from her mission in Japan.

My Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades: An LDS Teen's Guide to Success is a witty, thoughtful book about what the youth of today can LOOK forward to in their future.  What they will quickly SEE is that the choices they are making now will determine where they will spend the future.  The book encourages youth to consider now what quality of life they desire and then take the steps to make it happen.

Each chapter is given a type of eyewear as a theme, which provides inSIGHT and perspective.  For example: Rose-colored glasses (we are often so busy wishing we were somewhere else in time that we neglect to enjoy where we are right now); Prescription glasses (our Patriarchal blessing helps us to SEE better and make better choices); Binoculars (when you reach outside of yourself and focus on others you can better see your own blessings); SONglasses (focus on the Savior in all things).

Each chapter contains enlightening and uplifting stories, poems and discussion to help youth plan their future, rather than let it just happen.

I have presented this material to many Church youth at Education Week, Youth Conferences, and Regional Young Women Conferences.  The lecture series is always a huge hit, encouraging me to put it all in a book that they could SEE again!

Testimonials:

"Trina Boice has written a book every LDS teen should read.  It is AWESOME!  I love it!  It will change their lives and help them develop into amazing individuals! Through advice, humor, and workbook style questions, teens can gain self-esteem, experiment on the gospel, and discover who they really are!" "Humor Super Hero Trina Boice uses her powers to cleverly compare Mardis Gras masks, eye patches, Mr. Potato Head glasses, and various other eyewear to a variety of life situations in her newest book, My Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades: An LDS Teen's Guide to Success Not only is her title entertaining, but between the covers you’ll find inspiration that leaves you laughing. I want to read it again. Shirley Bahlmann, author of the popular “Odds” series of true pioneer stories."   http://shirleybahlmann.blogspot.com

“I just finished Trina Boice’s book My Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades: An LDS Teen's Guide to Success Trina has done an amazing job of mixing humor, logic and the teachings of modern day prophets to make this book both appealing and valuable. I highly recommend this book to both the youth and their parents. It will be a tremendous benefit to those who will read and follow the principles shared.”   Randal Wright, author Achieving Your Life Mission, Building Better Homes and Families, Protecting Your Family in an X-Rated World

“Trina Boice provides a wonderful and light hearted way for teens to see those things in their life that can cloud their vision of eternal things. Easy to read and filled with fun illustrations, kids will find themselves smiling as they begin to see themselves through different lenses. This book comes at a critical time as LDS youth are being challenged as never before. It helps them better understand the joy they will feel as they proudly stand for what they believe. As they begin to "see as they are seen", they will better understand their place in the Plan of Happiness.  My Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades: An LDS Teen's Guide to Success is a must read for today's amazing youth!”

Fay Kingler introduces two new books for women and daughters

A terrific writer and friend of mine, Fay Klingler, has not one...but two books hitting store shelves and I wanted to let you know about them!

Kay is a true artist at heart, blending her colorful imagination with her passion for writing.  Over the years she has mixed her talents as a commercial art instructor, technical writer, editor, and project leader for several different corporations.

She has even designed greeting cards and has a piece of artwork on display in New York for the American Mothers, Inc. which also honored her as the Young Mother of the Year in 1981!

Kay has used her artwork and inspiring words to craft two beautiful books that will lift your soul.  We Are Strong! Mothers and Daughters Stand Together features real-life stories from women of all ages to define how and why we must continue to live and teach the LDS Young Women values, such as faith, divine nature, knowledge, good works, and integrity.  You will be left with a feeling of hope and motivation to make a positive difference in the world.

I Am Strong!  I Am Strong! I Am Smart! is a sweet children's tale of an aging woman and her granddaughter as their bonds unite across generations and hearts.  We learn that we all have value, despite our flaws and doubts.  Young girls will especially feel empowered and worthwhile as they read this touching story of love and service.

If you have a daughter, you'll enjoy these two sweet books that you can share with her as you develop Christ-like qualities of love and faith!

Ready Resource for Relief Society 2014 is now available for pre-order

Great news! The 2014 "Ready Resource for #ReliefSociety" is out!

Well, it's not on store shelves just yet, but you can pre-order your copies on Amazon today!

The picture shows a cover similar to last year's edition, but it will actually be blue in 2014.  This handy resource book makes lesson preparation so much easier so that you can spend more time focusing on the Spirit and meeting the needs of your specific class.

There are 3 new features in this new edition:

* Scripture Mastery verses that help parents memorize the same scriptures as their teenagers in Seminary.  Each lesson focuses on the Scripture Mastery references that relate to the same topic.

* Preach My Gospel page references to help the class become more familiar with this terrific missionary tool. President Monson said in the Fall 2013 General Conference "Now is the time for members and missionaries to work together..." The page references will help readers learn how to incorporate missionary work and focused studies on the topic.

* A weekly challenge to deepen learning and increase application of the topic.

The 2014 edition still includes the favorite features you love to help you prepare your Sunday lessons during Relief Society and Priesthood:

* Object lesson ideas

* Hymns and music that go along with the theme

* Suggested artwork and visual aids

* References to articles in Church magazines and General Conference talks

* Ideas for showing videos to correlate with each week's topic

* A handout that can be copied and given to everyone in the class I think you're going to LOVE this new book!

If you're interested in any of the previous year's issues, they can also be purchased online at Amazon for a new low price! They're TERRIFIC for Family Home
Evening lessons and youth topical lessons for Sunday School!

The Good Word podcast with Trina Boice

http://www.radiogoldproductions.com/thegoodword/episode-104-interview-with-trina-boice/

                                           Logo

I recently did an interview with a new friend, Nick Galieti, host of "The Good Word" podcast.  He's an author himself who has created a wonderful outlet for other LDS authors to spread the news about their books and literary passions.

Nick records his shows at Eborn Books in downtown Salt Lake City and then hosts a book signing right after the interview.   Unfortunately, I don't live in Utah, so our interview was held over the phone only.   Drats!  It would have been fun to meet him in person and visit with other guests!

The Good Word is designed to be a show where all books are welcome and the craft of writing is discussed to lift and inspire.  He was a great interviewer and allowed me to slobber on and on about some of my newest projects, as well as talk about some of my favorite books from the past.
